Tomorrow Together: MIssion Comprehensive Plan

Mission, Kansas

A landlocked first-ring suburb experiencing new infill residential and mixed-use development through its primary corridor, the City of Mission needed to update their comprehensive plan to guide anticipated future growth.

Mission is a unique multi-generational community with a distinctive look and feel - something the community wants to see preserved. Mission has experienced a recent influx of redevelopment interest due to its relative affordability within the KC metro area, it's proximity to employment, entertainment and cultural centers within the region, and the recent commercial revitalization of the Johnson Drive Corridor.

Our team facilitated the planning process with extensive community engagement (pre- and post-pandemic) through use of an interactive website, community workshops and stakeholder interviews.  Our engagement efforts throughout the plan creation included significant discussions and reviews with City Department representatives, elected officials, Planning Commissioners, and City staff.

Among numerous other recommendations, the new comprehensive plan anticipates additional demand for mid-density "missing middle" housing which can provide an appropriate transition from the existing form and scale of single-family neighborhoods to the newer much taller residential mixed-use buildings. Strategies for guiding strategic additional growth and redevelopment opportunities were also explored and integrated into the plan.
