The 51st Street Promenade project transforms a key section of the UMKC campus—stretching from Rockhill Road to Cherry Street—into a vibrant, multifunctional public space.
Initially conceptualized in a 2022 Master Plan alongside Hollis + Miller, final designs by Confluence—in collaboration with Nabholz Construction Corporation, Streets Smart Design Build, and site furnishing partner Vestre—address significant elevation challenges while creating a safer, more accessible, and engaging environment.
A major factor in the project’s success was Linda Hall Library vacating half of 51st Street, allowing the University to utilize the roadway and adjacent greenspace fully. The design limits vehicular access to UMKC maintenance crews, deliveries, and emergency services. Inspired by tactical urbanism, the improvements emphasize flexibility and low-maintenance features such as paint striping, bollards, a dedicated bike lane, yard games, string lighting, and site furnishings.
At the heart of the promenade lies ‘Roo Plaza,’ a central gathering space at the top of the hill. On the west end, new seating provides direct access to the UMKC Student Union and Swinney Recreation Center. With a grand opening in April 2025, the reimagined 51st Street Promenade has become a welcoming and lively destination for students, staff, and the broader community.
