L.W. Clapp Park Master Plan
Client
City of Wichita
Size
95 acres
Wichita, Kansas
With dwindling usage creating growing subsidies over time, the Clapp Memorial Golf Course needed a re-imagination of this public amenity. The City engaged the Confluence Team to develop a bold new vision for this critical green space in southeast Wichita.
The master plan aims to re-envision the park as a destination for residents, the entire city, and beyond. Through a rigorous public engagement process that reached 980 individuals through an online survey and over 60 individuals in online presentations, the Confluence Team was able to capture the desires and hope of the community for this important green space. The master plan includes a promenade featuring a central green surrounded by a Bistro, a year-round event pavilion, and an amphitheater with a performance pavilion.
A large raised earthen plinth is known as “aviation hill” is adjacent to the promenade where visitors enjoy a view of planes departing and returning to the historic McConnell Air Force Base. A sports pavilion that includes outdoor pickleball and basketball courts, as well as Wichita’s first pump track, will provide active recreation for a broad range of users. The celebration pavilion serves as the hub of activity for younger park users and includes a large, inclusive destination playground, water play, and multi-court cornhole facility. A dog park, neighborhood scaled playground, and a disc golf course are also planned.
