Confluence designed and built the Kansas City area’s first true Parklet, which transformed an on-street parking space into a vibrant pedestrian amenity that supports adjacent local businesses.
Prior to this initiative, temporary transformations of parking spaces to a pedestrian-oriented amenity typically included a one-day experience on National Parking Day. Our team wanted to explore an opportunity to elevate the impact of this type of urban intervention - leaving it in place for more than 3 months. We began creating design ideas and issued an RFP (Request for Parklet) to several local districts in the metro area.
A Crossroads business became the first iteration of this concept. In partnership with Structura, Inc., we collaborated on the production of this semi-permanent installation. It acts as an extension of the sidewalk, providing green space for people occupying what would otherwise be a street parking space. We utilized Accoyo Wood waste pieces from Structura's production facility that were planned to be discarded - crafting an amenity deck complete with seating, landscape enhancements, and a solar-powered light fixture.
The parklet was first installed in 2013 at 18th and Wyandotte in Kansas City’s Crossroads Art District from Memorial Day to Labor Day and became a popular spot for dining, relaxing, dancing and listening to live music. It enjoyed four full seasons of use, eventually being relocated to two other Crossroads locations in 2015 and 2016, and then in Downtown Independence, Missouri in 2017 before its eventual retirement.
