St. Cloud RiverWalk

St. Cloud, Minnesota

The St. Cloud RiverWalk project represents a landmark opportunity for the community to continue their vision for reconnecting to the Mississippi River. Leading a multi-disciplinary team, Confluence was selected by the City to craft a unifying vision and revitalization recommendations to transform this area into a pedestrian-friendly community attraction.

The planning process included a series of facilitated stakeholder meetings and community outreach efforts that informed the final recommendations.  The RiverWalk has great potential to become a linear park system for passive and active recreation, and to link two of central Minnesota’s largest employers – St. Cloud State University and CentraCare. This project will also improve connectivity between Downtown St. Cloud, the historic Hester Park, and the future Wobegon Regional Trail.

The RiverWalk is envisioned to serve as a regional destination accommodating active recreation and community events, while also serving as an iconic new place to sustainably interact with the Mississippi River environs. Additionally, restoring shoreline habitat and correcting existing storm water systems and erosion issues will create safe and attractive water access while improving fishing and recreation opportunities.

This project also has tremendous potential for adjacent economic development potential, and included exploring opportunities to reshape the public street network, alignment and configuration to integrate new trail connections while allowing adjacent properties to take full advantage of their proximity to the river environment.
