Ames Intermodal Facility
Ames, Iowa
Confluence was retained as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide site design services for the new Intermodal Transportation Facility in Ames, Iowa. A collaborative effort between City of Ames, CyRide and Iowa State University, this facility would accommodate and link public and private transportation modes with a needed parking facility. It could also potentially stimulate long-term redevelopment and revitalization in the community.
Key project components include a terminal and bus bays for inter-city and regional carriers, a taxi-stand, public restrooms, structured and surface parking for a total of just under 400 parking stalls, and office space to support security and management of the facility. A new multi-use trail will allow residents and visitors of the University to move between ISU, the ISU Arboretum, and the extensive Ames trails system.
The new facility’s site is centrally located within the Ames community and on the fringe of two important economic generators – Iowa State University and the Campustown commercial/retail area. The economic development portion of this facility will be an integral component of this project. Iowa State University (ISU) sponsored a Campustown study that identified, as a key component to spur the redevelopment, a parking structure to support the business core. Confluence has also explored the adjacent redevelopment potential of the Campustown District and its anticipated relationship on this facility.
The Ames Intermodal Facility is designed to be a stand-alone facility, but with the capability to accommodate additional phases in the future. The facility is anticipated to achieve LEED Gold certification.
