Hickman Mills Early Childhood Education Center
Kansas City, Missouri
Confluence was selected to provide landscape and playground design for the Hickman Mills Early Childhood Center in Kansas City, Missouri. The 42,000 square foot building, designed to meet the developmental needs of children between the ages of 3 and 5, is the district’s first new facility in more than 35 years. The site incorporates sustainable features, including stormwater best management practices, that can be integrated into the school’s educational curriculum. Paved plaza spaces adjacent to the building offer flexible locations for outdoor learning, art activities and dining. A traditional play structure, swing set, tricycle track and sand play area are combined with natural elements including landforms, boulders and native plantings to encourage both structured and creative, free play.
