Veteran's Memorial Park
Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Confluence provided design services for Phase IV of the Veterans’ Memorial Park, a 22-acre park intended to honor and commemorate local U.S. veterans for their service. This project included site selection and master planning. The selected site for the park is located north of Covell Lake and is a former location of a WWII Army Air Corps training base. This historical context and its proximity to the airport, convention center, lodging, dining and other public infrastructure made the site a natural selection.
Public input workshops were used to identify issues and to create a design that truly served the community’s and the veterans’ need for a variety of activities and events. The plan also included formal and informal gathering areas, a Medal of Honor Garden, accessible parking, memorials, art, and an activity plaza. A series of ponds and meandering drainage channels were added to improve stormwater capacity and enhance the aesthetics of the park
