University Avenue Corridor

Cedar Falls & Waterloo, Iowa

University Avenue has long been the major east/west artery between Cedar Falls and Waterloo. With declining traffic volumes and an existing 6-lane roadway, INRCOG retained Confluence as part of a multi-disciplinary team to study the impacts of removing traffic lanes, adding bike lanes, and designing an overall aesthetic that reflected both communities.

The resultant streetscape master plan proposed a number of improvements: round-a-bouts at key intersections containing iconic sculpture within each; bio-swales adjacent to the roadway; bolstering the ‘greenway’ with a strong street tree presence; adding markers at important nodes throughout the corridor; and LED street lights. The new ‘complete street’ is a bold step for this area and supports the tradition of cutting-edge planning that Cedar Falls and Waterloo are known for.
