Our Work

Iowa Avenue Streetscape

Iowa City, Iowa

The Iowa Avenue Streetscape is a 3-block reconstruction from building face to building face and is based on the master plan prepared by Confluence. Work in the area included water main replacement, sanitary sewer replacement, special paving, corridor lighting, watering hydrants, site furnishings including benches, trash receptacles and ash urns. The project is one of the first in the state of Iowa to utilize structural soil as the growth medium for street trees.

Our scope of services included preparation of the master plan for this portion of the corridor, consensus building with University of Iowa and private business owners, presenting the master plan to City Council for approval, preparation of design development drawings, cost estimation, final construction documents, specifications and construction observation.

The project was constructed in two phases, with Phase I including the first block in conjunction with a new parking ramp facility. Phase II included construction of the two remaining blocks and which incorporated one complete block of pavers in the street to serve as a public plaza for special events. The project also included a public art “literary” sidewalk with concrete stamping and bronze plaques depicting famous authors associated with the Iowa City area.
