Augustana College – Campus Planning
Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Athletic Complex + Soccer Field: The Augustana College selected Confluence to assist in the planning of their new athletic field. The existing 13-acre site is hilly and open, and is located on the south edge of a landlocked private college. The site is being used strategically to serve as a borrow area – providing fill material for the construction of a new football stadium on the campus. This approach allowed for a previously cost-prohibitive project to become financially feasible.
Phase I involved the construction of a soccer field that integrates a crowned surface with sub-surface drainage system and irrigation, all constructed to NCAA specifications. Planning for phased track improvements involved an international broken-back curve track with field events consolidated inside the track area.
Visual Arts Courtyard: The design of this courtyard was created to complement the new Visual Arts Building while creating a welcoming space between this building and the existing Humanities Building on the Augustana College Campus. The Confluence team was charged with creating a space that was both highly functional and visually appealing.
Concrete pedestals are incorporated throughout the courtyard to display art while also serving as seating opportunities. The purposeful selection of contrasting building materials – such as rough stone vs. smooth metal, or an island of lush plantings among a pond of pea gravel – creates a visually interesting space for art students to be creative while also providing a unique sketching environment.
The Courtyard was conceived to flexibly serve a variety of functions and purposes. It can seat up to 50 guests for use a reception area or as a small performing arts space, and can also serve as a quiet place of retreat, reflection, and relaxation or study.
