Lenexa Fire Station #5

Confluence was an integral part of a multi-disciplinary team tasked with designing a new Fire Station on a small site already owned by the City of Lenexa.  To avoid the additional cost of acquiring any adjacent property, our design team needed to create an efficient and functional layout plan that met project objectives. A collaborative design process was utilized to involve both the design team and City staff in understanding challenges and exploring alternatives.  This effort yielded a solid project program and conceptual layout which allowed the project to proceed on the existing parcel of land.

Confluence team members assisted with site design and prepared the site landscape plan. The landscape design incorporates native plantings that will conserve water use and will minimize site maintenance needs over time. A rain garden is incorporated to collect storm water from the site, slow run-off, and reduce the discharge of pollutants from the parking lot. A green roof system was installed over a portion of the facility. The City will monitor the green roof installation over time in order to understand maintenance requirements and to quantify the benefits to the fire station for consideration in future civic facility construction. These elements, along with highly efficient building and mechanical systems, enabled the facility to achieve LEED Silver Certification.
