Linden Square Receives Award

The Keystone Recognition Awards honor those who have made a significant contribution to Clay County’s economy and quality of life.
Linden Square at Gladstone Village Center is a signature destination park which serves as a central gathering place in the City’s emerging Village Center redevelopment area. Located between City Hall and the new Dentistry for Children building, the park space is designed to host weekly programmed family-friendly events as well as numerous larger community events and festivals throughout the year.
Key design features include an amphitheater, a pavilion that serves as a stage, an open lawn space that converts to a synthetic ice rink, pedestrian plaza spaces, and a parking lot that can be utilized as a community farmers’ market.

The Big Sioux River Downtown Greenway was awarded a 2013 Mayor’s Sioux Fall Beautiful Award at the November 12, 2013 City Council meeting.
Each year, the Sioux Falls Beautiful Committee and the Mayor of Sioux Falls jointly recognize significant enhancement projects through the Mayor’s Sioux Falls Beautiful Awards Program.
Sioux Falls Beautiful is a nonprofit citizen group whose mission is to beautify and improve the outdoor environment throughout Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Sioux Falls Beautiful works to enhance the landscape by advocating for the creation of attractive, new, and existing public spaces through the use of color and light and encouraging attractive plantings and sustainable practices on private residential, commercial, and public properties.
Earlier this week, the River Greenway pedestrian bridge opened, linking the River Greenway trail to the downtown district. The River Greenway is just one of many exciting changes that have taken place in Sioux Falls as illustrated in a recent Business Journal article.

Confluence principals Chris Cline and Terry Berkbuegler were both selected to present education sessions at American Planning Association (APA) state conferences.· view full ·
Chris Cline, along with other members of the consultant team responsible for the recently completed North Oak Corridor Study, will present ‘Land Use Scenarios Supportive of Streetcar, BRT, or Enhanced Transit service in the North Oak Corridor (Kansas City, North Kansas City, and Gladstone MO)’ at the Missouri APA State Conference in Branson, Missouri on Friday, October 18.
The North Oak Corridor Study completed for the City of Kansas City, MO and funded as part of a sustainability grant awarded to the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC), identified the costs and characteristics of a variety of transit options to serve the corridor. The study also examined the development characteristics of the corridor and identified which corridor-wide changes would make transit most successful.
At the Kansas APA State Conference recently held in Manhattan, Kansas, Terry Berkbuegler was a presenter of a session entitled ‘Parks, Open Space and Trails: Planning for Your City’s Health’ which focused on the importance of developing and maintaining a comprehensive plan for a community’s parks and recreation system and economic vitality.
Confluence is also an exhibitor at the Iowa Chapter APA Conference being held October 16-18 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Terry has been practicing landscape architecture in the United States and Canada for over twenty years. He has an extensive background in urban planning, programming and public space design. Terry collaborates with his clients to develop innovative and contextually sensitive design solutions. As Principal, he is responsible for design and operations for the Confluence Minneapolis office. Terry has dedicated his career to creating meaningful spaces that challenge the conventional boundaries of landscape architecture. Terry takes a multi-disciplinary approach to design, often working closely with design teams of architects, planners, artists, and other professionals, including a diverse range of clients. Terry’s award winning body of work includes major civic plazas, urban parks, hospitality, medical and corporate campuses and master planning. Terry brings his uncompromising passion for design excellence, knowledge of construction, and positive attitude to the design team. Terry holds a Bachelor of Environmental Design and a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Manitoba and is an active member of the Minnesota chapter of ASLA.
Terry follows the practice that business is built on long-term relationships. It is critical to always provide more than expected on every project. One’s reputation and how you treat people is what will be remembered most.

Chris joined Confluence in 2013 to continue the growth of the firm by bringing his practical urban planning experience to the team. He jumped at the opportunity to be a part of the Confluence team because, as he put it, “This is a solid and growing firm that really does things the right way for the right reason, serving their clients well.”
During his more than 18 years as a city planner and a development manager, Chris has witnessed billions of dollars in new development and building construction and processed hundreds of development applications. Prior to joining Confluence, he was responsible for managing the development review process for the City of West Des Moines, Iowa; an award winning, fast growing community in the Des Moines Metropolitan area. His experience in the public sector has allowed him the opportunity see first-hand what works and what doesn’t, and he feels strongly that attention to detail is very important in everything you do.
Chris is a Des Moines native and graduated from Iowa State University with a Bachelor of Science in Community and Regional Planning. He is an active member of the Iowa Chapter of the American Planning Association and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).

Jason graduated from Iowa State University with a double major in Landscape Architecture and Spanish. During his time at Iowa State, Jason used travel as a means to discover new spaces. He studied in Spain and Portland, Oregon, where he spent a good deal of his time “walking around and looking at stuff.” In addition to his travel experiences, Jason also has a background in landscape construction and maintenance. His exposure to this kind of work, paired with a natural curiosity, has helped him develop creative problem solving skills and a hands-on approach to design.

A recent graduate from North Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and Environmental Design, Jake is excited to bring his enthusiasm and insight to the Sioux Falls office and further expand his knowledge and skill set as an emerging professional. He is passionate about helping people envision ways to plan and create memorable places through a meaningful, transparent thought process – ultimately making our communities better and more desirable. In his free time, you will find Jake at the local farmer’s market, exploring new ways to cook, “attempting” to garden, biking, running, golfing – basically any excuse to get out and be active.
Caleb joins as a summer intern in the Kansas City office. A native of Perryville, Missouri, Caleb recently returned to the states after a semester of study in the tiny hilltop town of Orvieto, Italy. This fall, he will return to Kansas State University to complete his Masters in Landscape Architecture. Caleb was drawn to landscape architecture through his fascination with people and plants. In addition to landscape architecture, Caleb is passionate about books, drawings and food.
Kansas City’s First Parklet

Confluence and Structura, Inc. collaborated to create Kansas City’s first “Parklet”, designed as an urban intervention to transform an on-street parking space into a vibrant pedestrian amenity.· view full ·
It was officially unveiled on June 7, 2013 as part of the Crossroad Art District’s First Friday event. Located in front of YJ’s Snack Bar at 18th and Wyandotte, the project incorporates wood decking, bench seating and landscaping that expands the sidewalk experience.
The improvements are scheduled to be in place throughout the summer until Labor Day – at which time it will be dismantled and removed. The team is already scouting potential locations for future parklets. For more information, visit http://crossroadsparklet.wordpress.com/

The Bay Water Park Receives Award

The Bay Water Park was awarded a 2013 EDC Cornerstone Award in recognition of its contribution to the growth of the city’s economy and positive impact on the surrounding community including employment increases, capital investment and improvements.· view full ·
This project, a state of the art aquatics facility located within Longview Tract Park in southeastern Kansas City, features a six lane lap pool, zero depth entry leisure pool, spray ground, 900 foot lazy river, slides, and swirl bowl as well as a concession stand and bathhouse.
Confluence in collaboration with the City of Kansas City Missouri Parks and Recreation Department, led the design of this $7.5 million water park which opened to the public on May 26, 2012.

2013 Award of Merit for Planning and Analysis for the Cedar Creek Area Plan
The City of Olathe selected a consultant team, led by Confluence, to prepare an area plan and overlay district for the 4,700-acre Cedar Creek Area. Confluence facilitated an interactive engagement process during which members of the community, the City, the development team, and other key stakeholders to refine the vision for future growth and development within the area. The planning study focused on future land use, regulatory considerations, architectural design standards, preservation of open space, transportation and infrastructure recommendations, and the use of sustainable best practices. The resulting plan defines an overlay district and the creation of a unique new zoning district specifically for use in the Cedar Creek area.
2013 Award of Merit for the North Oak Corridor Streetscape Master Plan
The City of Kansas City, Missouri selected a consultant team led by Confluence to prepare a community driven streetscape master plan for a 3.5-mile segment of the North Oak Corridor, a primary north/south commercial corridor in Kansas City’s Northland area. Building on the City’s prior adoption of a corridor and land use plan, Confluence engaged key corridor stakeholders in an interactive design process to identify current conditions, explore alternative design solutions and establish long-term goals for revitalizing this important corridor. Special consideration was given to multi-modal transportation, improved corridor aesthetics, and sustainable design practices. The resulting plan was adopted by Kansas City, Missouri’s City Council in 2012.
2013 Award of Honor for Design (Built) for the Main Street Streetscape Design
After preparing a streetscape master plan for the Main Street Corridor, Confluence was hired by the Main Street Corridor Development Corporation (MainCor) to lead the final design and implementation, which has transformed the visual character in Kansas City’s Midtown area.
The streetscape design focuses on prioritizing pedestrian circulation, building a stronger district identity for the Main Street corridor, and creating a unique and vibrant atmosphere that is attractive to new businesses and residents alike. Today, MainCor is experiencing increased interest from new businesses and a number of previously under-performing properties are being redeveloped.

Our Kansas City employees and their families celebrated with Mayor Carol Suter, Gladstone City Council members, residents and visitors at the dedication of Gladstone, Missouri’s new Linden Square on Friday, April 5. We were pleased to be a part of this exciting City funded project to serve as the new “city center” and a catalyst for development by creating a focal point and destination for surrounding neighborhoods and the community as a whole.· view full ·
Linden Square provides a new community event space including an outdoor pavilion and open lawn area that is converted into a synthetic ice rink in the winter months. The site will also host the Mayor’s Christmas Tree display and the City’s Farmers Market. Through a public/private partnership, a new office building is being constructed adjacent to the square and will allow for a long-term lease option with the City to operate concessions, skate rentals, equipment storage and restrooms on the ground floor.

Confluence Celebrates the Grand Opening of Donnelly College Community Event Center

Confluence recently celebrated the grand opening and dedication of the Donnelly College Community Event Center in Kansas City, Kansas.· view full ·
This new venue will serve as the college’s event programming space while also providing meeting and event space for local community organizations. Adjacent to the building, the Confluence designed event plaza will provide an outdoor gathering and event space for patrons.
The Event Center opening marks the completion of the first phase of a comprehensive, multi-year campus renovation and improvement plan for Donnelly College, an independent Catholic institution in Kansas City, Kansas. As part of a multi-disciplinary design team, Confluence was retained to provide site design services including courtyard design, new parking lot, north and south campus entry markers, and a quiet reflection garden on the roof of the new facility.

After spending ten years in Dallas Texas, Hanks’ passion for the Kansas City area, the Midwest landscape and the community brought him home. Through his experiences over the past ten years, he has developed a strong passion for the land and its inherent value provided through historic, cultural and ecological traditions. His belief in these values has allowed Hank to create landscapes that balance the sustainable needs sites with the desires of the client resulting in imaginative and responsive designs which enhance the lives of the people who take part in the sites’ final use. His experience has allowed him to be involved in many wonderful and diverse projects from large to small scales in public to private sector developments around the world.
In his free time, Hank can be found running around with his wife Emily for their daughter Addysons’ activities, working on his house, golfing, fishing and supporting his K-State Wildcats.
